I can see the Irish turning the French over to be honest. France have been shocking so far considering the individual talents in the squad.

Platini weighs in behind FIFA’s play-off seeding plan
By Paul Kelly
Saturday, October 03, 2009

UEFA president Michel Platini fully supports FIFA’s decision to seed the European teams that will contest four World Cup play-offs next month, it has emerged.

UEFA proposed the controversial seeding scheme to FIFA, based on the world governing body’s official rankings.

"As a member of the FIFA Executive Committee, Monsieur Platini fully agrees with and supports the decision taken by the committee on Tuesday," a UEFA spokesman told the Irish Examiner yesterday.

"But this is a FIFA matter and he will not grant any interview on the subject."

Platini won the UEFA presidency in January 2007 with the support of less powerful federations, including the FAI, who welcomed his pledge to make the Champions’ League more accessible to clubs outside England, Spain, Italy and Germany.

In that context, his stance this week will be deemed disappointing by Europe’s non-superpowers.

Platini, deputy chairman of the World Cup Organising Committee and a vice-president of FIFA’s Executive Committee, might reasonably argue the World Cup is not within UEFA’s control, and that his support for an expansion in the number of European Championship finalists is a sign of his good faith with those federations who elected him.

However, the revelation that UEFA proposed the restrictive seeding system to FIFA is bound to embarrass the former French star.

Under World Cup competition regulations, UEFA was required to propose what method should be adopted for the play-off draw in the Europe qualifying zone. "The proposal made by UEFA was the one approved by FIFA," the UEFA spokesman confirmed. Chaired by Platini, UEFA’s Executive Committee contains one representative each from Germany, Italy, England, Holland, Denmark, Slovakia, Israel, Cyprus and Lithuania.

UEFA is concerned its share of places at the World Cup finals has been reduced in recent years, and that this was a significant factor in its proposing a scheme that excludes the possibility of ‘heavyweights’ eliminating one another at the play-off stage.

This story appeared in the printed version of the Irish Examiner Saturday, October 03, 2009

For all the Irish whining about the play-off seeds though it's hardly a suprise is it? Not only are the group stages of the WC itself seeded but so were the play-offs for the last one. FIFA always look out for the major teams, always have, always will.

I got fed up of FIFA and the World Cup years ago. I'd prefer to see a return to the end of season Home Internationals.
