IMO Richie Benaud took cricket commentary, in England, from being a dull Public Schoolboy type monologue (typified at the time by Peter West who also commentated on Come Dancing) into the modern era.
Brilliant analyst, straight talking with a dry sense of humour he paved the way and set the standard for cricket commentary and analysis which has evolved into its present format. Of course it helped that he was an ex-pro and had “been there done that”. The bloke was and forever will be a cricketing icon. RIP Richie. |
