Reigning Belgian champions Standard Liege have made the decision to appeal the 11-match ban midfielder Axel Witsel received from the Belgian FA (KBVB) in the wake of his red card against Anderlecht on Sunday.

Witsel stated on Tuesday that he would accept any suspension and would not appeal a ban. However, the midfielder's club have decided different and want the youngster back in action sooner than November 23, the day his suspension is due to expire.

The Belgian international received his marching orders after 24 minutes of play following a reckless challenge on Anderlecht defender Marcin Wasilewski. The latter will be unavailable for an estimated 12 months due to the broken leg he sustained, though the Polish team doctor believes the right-back could be training as soon as March.

"The press and fans have created a hostile atmosphere against Standard Liege and Axel Witsel. He has always been a role model on the pitch and the KBVB now use this against him. This is unacceptable," Standard director Pierre Francois said in a press conference on Wednesday, where the Belgian giants explained their decision to appeal Witsel's ban.

"We have the feeling that the KBVB did not listen to our arguments. Axel never had the intention to injure Wasilewski. We would have handed him a long suspension ourselves if we felt his intentions were bad. We want this situation to stop and demand a fair verdict on Friday."
