Although Hick has impressive FC stats he is generally considered to be a failure at Test level as he never came anywhere close to producing the same form. You need mental toughness to be successful at Test level and Hick’s Test stats indicate he couldn’t hack it.

Sounds like Matthews has made Dean Jones’s epic innings into a pissing contest. Pity really.
Reading articles like that always puts me off ever going to India. Although it was 30 years ago a mate of mine (who is forced to go there by his employer) reckons it’s still an absolute shithole, but over time some parts have improved. |

The Bagman put a comment in the Shout Box that old Max had passed on. Well I thought Max was worth a post on. I remember Max bowling in an Ashes Series in England, him being first change with Lillee and Tommo opening the bowling. He had a very odd bowling action that nobody could ever be coached or even advised to adopt. But I have never seen any bowler seam/swing the ball as much as Max could. Every single ball he bowled did something.
I was a young lad at the time and was completely mesmerised by every delivery. Inswinging leg cutters, outswinging off cutters, Max was just about unplayable. Maybe his bowling technique was more suited to England conditions but he could certainly make the ball talk. Don’t think Max quite got the recognition he deserved playing second fiddle to Lillee and Tommo but he was definitely a class act. |
