Default Richie Benaud RIP

Sad death of a true cricket legend and about the only Aussie gentleman ever.

RIP Richie Benaud

IMO Richie Benaud took cricket commentary, in England, from being a dull Public Schoolboy type monologue (typified at the time by Peter West who also commentated on Come Dancing) into the modern era.

Brilliant analyst, straight talking with a dry sense of humour he paved the way and set the standard for cricket commentary and analysis which has evolved into its present format. Of course it helped that he was an ex-pro and had “been there done that”.

The bloke was and forever will be a cricketing icon. RIP Richie.

A bit of trivia

I daresay that I am probably one of the few (if any) members of this board that actually seen Richie Benaud play Test cricket. I was all of 9 years of age when my uncle took me to the third days play of the 3rd Test of the Ashes series in January 1962 at the Sydney Cricket Ground.

I can't remember much other than we were sitting in the stand at the Randwick (southern end). I remember Barry Shepherd's 71no and Alan Davidson taking lots of wickets.

Thanks to the wonders of the internet, it is all here.

Scorecard Sydney Test 1962

Interesting to see the slow over and scoring rates of those days compared to now. Admittedly it was 8 ball overs but it has been calculated to 6 ball over equivalence. Not to mention the then standard rest day. Much more civilised

Vale Richie Benaud

You will be missed

From Richie Benauds Crickinfo profile:

A guru to Ian Chappell and Shane Warne among others, he is perhaps the most influential cricketer and cricket personality since the Second World War.

Agreed 100%. Or a million % as they say in the LOS.
