laptop accident - old data recovery ?
Hi
Entirely my fault, managed to knock over a drink on to my laptop, it immediately powered off. Took it to Tuk Com for repair, bought a 2nd hand Dell as a stop gap. One week on, get told it cannot be repaired, both keyboard and motherboard kaput. fair enough, it is old and although I liked it was due for replacement. I have 3 things on there that are important to me though: Approx 400-500 bookmarks. Some photos downloaded on to it. Some music videos downloaded on to it. No back ups of anything, silly me. These would be on the Hard Drive/memory ? which might be OK or recoverable I guess ? Is my thinking that correct ? If so roughly how long should it take to remove the Hard Drive/memory and either put on a replacement Hard drive or transfer to the replacement Dell ? If feasible I`d likely get some technician to do that as it would be beyond me. Many Thanks. |

If it is an IDE or sata hard drive should be able to purchase a hard drive enclosure that will permit it to work as a external hard drive via a usb cable. http://popular.ebay.com/ide-hard-drive-enclosure
Another alternative may be to take the hard drive and swap it for hard drive in the dell you just bought if it is the same type. When you reboot you should have access to enable you to back everything up. Should be easy enough to do your self. Most hard drives on dell are below a cover with two screws on the base. Remove the screws unplug the drive and plug the old one in, don't need to refit the cover. Restart in safe mode if it gives any errors. Everything will be saved on your hard drive nothing will be on the memory Ram. Give me a call if you need any help or bring the computer to me and I'll do it for you but it should be easy enough.

Welcome to the club Paul - I've stuffed up 3 laptops in exactly the same way - A glass of red does it every time.
As Tom says it's a fairly easy process to recover the data off the hard disk as it generally remains untouched by the liquid.

As an update, I took up Tom`s very kind offer to help out, which he did , I did nothing, beyond me.
Got back much of what was important to me and learned a bit in the process. An open Thank You to Tom, much appreciated. |
