Default Internet connection

In the past I have taken a small netbook to LOS and through a combination of WiFi, hardwire or various SIM cards in various dongles I have always managed to get an internet connection wherever I have been, even in the wilds of Issan.

After an encounter with a boiling kettle my netbook is no more. I have replaced it with a Samsung tablet thingy. That has no hardwire connection but works great in WiFi or with a 3G dongle stuck in it if I am out on the road.

Question is, with the exception of a few major urban areas (and even there it is patchy) 3G doesn`t seem to have arrived in Thailand. If I plug my existing Thai network dongle in (2G..??) will owt happen. Good or bad.
