Great thread nose.

1954 World Series, Willie Mays with "The Catch."

And then the other "Catch" in S.F. sports history (well, Mays was still in New York in '54 but you know what I mean...) ...Montana to Clark to beat the evil Dallas Cowboys and start the run the 49'ers had back in the day. Not as outstanding of plays as the ones you put up, but big plays in big situations.

Larry Bird steals inbound pass from Isiah Thomas and the Celtics win a big playoff game...

mack 12-07-2007 10:59 AM

I remember that play nose...a big situation like that and the inbounds pass is soft and the player it was intended for didn't step towards it...you couldn't get away with sloppy play like that with the Celtics back then.

I looked for a catch I saw Mays make on T.V. at the Stick where he went full speed into right-center towards the cyclone fence and Barry's father Bobby was heading to the same spot from right field and they both jumped but Mays outjumped Bonds and got it as they both crashed into the fence. Mays stayed down for awhile but eventually got up...the ball firmly wedged in the web of his glove of course. Couldn't find it on Youtube but that was an incredible catch also.

When the Giants moved from New York in 1958 we still lived in Oakland but moved late that summer 3 hours south by car but before we moved my parents took us to Seals Stadium where the Giants played their home games in 1958 and 1959 before Candlestick was finished. Seals Stadium was a small park with a capacity of only 18,600 so you were right on top of things, not like at the Stick. I saw many games in person many games of the Giants and Mays that my Dad took me to. At practically every game Mays would do something outstanding, either at the plate, on the bases or in center. We once saw him score from 1st on a pick-off attempt that got away from the 1st baseman. As Mays rounded 2nd he froze the 1st baseman who had the ball...he didn't know if May was going to go back to 2nd or break towards 3rd. Mays broke for 3rd and I thought he was dead but the 1st baseman threw it wildly and it got away again. By this time the whole crowd is on it's feet yelling...Mays gets up from the slide and goes for home and barely beats the throw there too. He had all 5 tools (run, throw, field, hit, hit with power) and played with a flair that practically no one else had (Clemente had that same flair and style too). Willie Mays was my all-time favorite ballplayer.

Damn Nose, Thanks for that reminder, I'm a die hard Celtic fan,(sorry Mack you probably love the Lakers) Bird was one of my favorites, with Russell, Cowens, Havlicek, Was great to watch as a kid, "Team" ball, mostly forgotten today.
Mack, you had a "great" ballplayer to watch in person, Willie transcended the game, read a book on him when I was a kid, inspiring. Side note:As a kid, I put together a "model" with glue of Willie Mays catch in center field at the fence, 454? feet, famous catch and then throw back ( can't remember ? 1954 World series-Polo grounds vs Cleveland?) oh well, thanks

mack 12-07-2007 04:27 PM

Yes 1954 at the Polo Grounds vs Cleveland Irish. I was a Laker fan back in about 1967 all the way up to when they kept Kobe and let Shaq go...after that happened I don't give a shit about them now. I always followed the Warriors too but there wasn't much to root for with them until last year and the playoffs. I always respected the great Celtic teams with Bird, McHale, DJ, the Chief etc. but no I didn't like them. :kid: Those were some great games though, when it was Magic, Kareem, Worthy and Co. vs Bird and his Boys.
