Despite denial, Thaksin sale of Man City possible

(BangkokPost.com) Manchester City have denied British media reports that ex-premier Thaksin Shinawatra is looking to sell the club just one year after purchasing a majority share.

Several British newspapers reported on Wednesday that Mr Thaksin was looking at offers from two possible buyers to off-load the team.

However, City officials have denied he is looking to get out. The Daily Mail, one of the papers reporting the sale rumours, later quoted "a City spokesperson" about its report.

The spokesperson said, according to the newspaper, "It is not true to say that Dr Thaksin Shinawatra is trying to sell Manchester City, nor that he is looking for a buyer.

"Since he bought the club a number of potential investors from his wide network of business associates have spoken to Dr Thaksin about investing in the club. These discussions have been nothing more than exploratory."

Mr Thaksin has a PhD and is sometimes called "doctor".

The recurring reports in the British media said that Mr Thaksin needs cash and time for his court battles at home, and "may be forced to sell City".

Man City admitted on Tuesday there have been "exploratory" talks between Mr Thaksin and potential investors.

At least three groups - believed to be based in the Middle East and India - have been approached by an intermediary with a brief to find the money to catapult City into the Premier League top four, the Manchester Evening News reported.

The bombshell that the dream ticket of having a rich owner, new stadium and top manger is under threat has stunned the Blues faithful, the newspaper said. They are already reeling from the likely sale of one of their favourites, Vedran Corluka, to Spurs for a perceived bargain 7 million UK pounds.

However, financial analysts say big money investors are likely to want full control and could launch a full-blown buy-out bid - and that would leave billionaire Thaksin with a major dilemma as he faces corruption charges with billions of baht of his fortune frozen.

The ex-premier has admitted that he alone cannot splash out to fulfil his ambition to break into the Premier League's top four raises a huge question mark about his confidence that his his frozen assets will be released. (with reports from Manchester)
