Here are some suggestions for guest-friendly small or mid-sized hotels in the Suk area where you can get decent rooms for between about 700 baht and 2,000 baht. I also listed a few upscale hotels towards the end. It's an eclectic list, certainly not a comprehensive one.

Because I have included the links, I'm not going to write in detail about each hotel. The Royal Ivory is down the street from the Nana Hotel and NEP, while the Ever Rich Inn is between Suk Soi 5 and Soi 7. The others are farther away, but still within easy BTS or taxi distance sometimes walking distance, of NEP and Soi Cowboy.

If you just use your hotel room for a few hours sleep and to screw, you're probably better off at the Majestic Suites, Manhattan, one of the Dynasties or even the grand-daddy of them all, the Nana Hotel. But if you want a room to chill out in for a few hours a day, some of the smaller hotels offer better value for money. I had a big room with a full kitchen (stove, fridge, microwave) at the Royal Ivory Nana for 1,800 baht/night.

The following is a booking agency that specializes in budget accommodation and can often find you a room when others can't.

Another emergency option is the venerable PB (Playboy) Hotel on Soi 3. It is best known as a S/T hotel, but has rooms on the second that would be suitable for sleeping a few hours, then showering and changing clothes if you've arrived very late or have to check out very early and don't want to pay for a full night at another hotel. Costs between 500 and 700 baht, depending on the night clerk's mood. PB can be far to find, best is to call on your cell and have the clerk describe the way for the taxi driver (tel nr 02-651-1525).

Here's a very basic, but clean, no-roach hotel with A/C at 700B/night, close to Nana: Thai House Inn (http://thai-house-inn.port5.com/#rooms)

An even cheaper place is NumberOne Guest House (http://www.numberonebangkok.com/index_en.htm) Trivia Question: Why does this place occupy a special place in the history of Bangkok P4P? It will be fun to see if any "veterans" get the answer right.

Not the best location, but very low price: Honey Hotel (http://www.bangkokhotels.info/honey.htm)

Also outside the Suk area, but great value for money under 650B/night. Taxi/moto will get you to the lower Suk. The colorfully named NasaVegasHotel (http://www.nasavegashotel.com/)

A good one on the lower Suk if you can afford 1,300B/night: Stable Lodge (http://www.stablelodge.com/)

Finally, some upscale GF hotels to balance the list:

President Solitaire (http://www.presidentsolitaire.com/)
A bit out of the way on Soi 11, but absolutely no problem to get a taxi day or night. However, if I couldn't get a Platinum Suite with giant jacuzzi and kitchen (5,100B/night), I doubt I'd want to stay at the PS.

Emporium Suites (http://www.emporiumsuites.com/)
Great swimming pool, well-equiped kitchen, right at Emporium shopping center and BTS station.

Dream Hotel Bangkok (http://www.dreambkk.com)
The coolest hotel in BKK, opened in October. All the TGs loved the Dream Suite (about $300 U.S./night- company paid). Several called relatives/friends just to come look at the suite.
